Wellington High junior Ashley Brasovan was named the first-ever
Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year Thursday
during a presentation at her high school.
Brasovan beat out more than 180,000 cross country winners nation-wide,
and she is the first athlete from Palm Beach County to be honored
as Gatorade Athlete of the Year.
Brasovan didn’t know until Wednesday night that she had won.
She was out to dinner with her family for what she thought was a celebration
of her sister’s birthday, when she was taken to a back room
and susprised by Gatorade officials.
“It’s just kind of, I don’t even know the words
for it,” she said. “I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Brasovan is a three-time Class 4A individual state champion who
also won the 2007 Foot Locker Cross Country Championship and was a
first-place finsher and set meet records at Tampa’s Southern
Stars Invitational, the University of Florida Mountain Dew Classic
and the Great American Cross Country Festival.
With the honor, Brasovan knows the next cross country season will
feature great expectations for her.
But she said, “I think it’ll be a little more pressure,
but if I’m calm and focused I’ll be okay.”
