Monday evening, the Boca Raton News and Lynn University hosted a
well-attended community forum on tax and property insurance reform.
It was organized by Lynn’s Dr. Robert P. Watson and News Managing
Editor, John Johnson, who acted as moderator. Two legislators, Rep.
Adam Hasner and Sen. Ted Deutch faced off against panelists: Mike
Jones, Economic Council of PB County; Pam Goodman, PB County League
of Women Voters and Jeff Perlman, former Mayor of the City of Delray
Beach. Further forums are planned for 2008.
Tuesday, I finally got to meet author and talented raconteur Carl
Hiaasen when he spoke at Lynn University's Dively Frontiers in Globalization
Luncheon Lecture Series. The Florida native was highly entertaining,
reading Miami Herald headlines which inspire his stories. Since he
writes a column for the Miami Herald, unlike most fiction writers,
the lucky Hiaasen doesn’t have to go far for inspiration!
That evening, I took a tour of Palm Beach Community College’s
new Countess Henrietta de Hoernle Humanities and Technology Building.
The impressive, four-story, 46,745-square-foot building houses state-of-the-art
learning facilities. The architecture class, which is fully subscribed,
has already moved in but the black tie “Shifting Sands”
Gala opening, chaired by Yvonne S. Boice, is scheduled for January
12. Tickets at $100 per person are available from 1-800-552-2793.
Then I dashed over to Airport Road to Muvico Theaters to celebrate
the first anniversary of Burt Rapoport’s Bogart's Bar &
Grille. The Premier Level party was also a benefit for the Dori Slosberg
Foundation. Co-hosts Burt Rapoport and Irv Slosberg welcomed 500 guests
to the event.
Wednesday, I celebrated my birthday with a sensational Mai Tai and
delicious dinner in the Tiki Hut booth at Nick’s Fish Market
of Hawaii! Genial host Nick Nickolas was on hand and things ran smoothly
right down to the surprise delivery of a sparkling (literally) chocolate
lava cake!
Two entertaining press releases came in this week--bottled “Real
New York Water,” for those of you who are homesick and a “Tofu-Not-A-Turkey”
Thanksgiving recipe for those of you who are vegetarians!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
And that is life in Boca…
