Boca Raton Community Hospital
Hosts Nationally Recognized Sleep Expert
Published March 16th, 2008
“The moment I heard Dr. Maas speak, I knew I had to bring him here to Boca Raton. The world we live in today is so jam packed with things to do, that we forget how to unwind and rest. We're all sleep deprived and running on empty. Dr. Maas' message is vitally important.” -Phyllis Sandler
In his only local appearance, Phyllis Sandler, Boca Raton Community Hospital Foundation and the Institute for Quality Aging are pleased to present Dr. James B. Maas, author of the New York Times bestseller “Power Sleep: The Revolutionary Program That Prepares Your Mind for Peak Performance.”
Dr. Maas is a social psychologist best known for his work in the field of sleep research, specifically the relationship between sleep and performance. He famously coined the term "power nap."
Sleep disorders are one of the most prevalent health concerns in America today. The impact of sleep deprivation upon mental and physical health, productivity and the economy is simply staggering. Unfortunately, most people are not well informed about the basics of healthy sleep. Dr. Maas’ free lecture will feature his “golden rules of sleep” and 20 great sleep strategies that anyone can use to get a better, more restful night’s sleep.
Dr. Maas’ believes "napping should not be frowned upon at the office or make you feel guilty at home. It should have the status of daily exercise." His lecture will examine the secrets shared by such famous napping enthusiasts as Albert Einstein, Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison and Bill Clinton. Dr. Maas’ says, “The information provided in this presentation will increase your daytime alertness, psychological mood, productivity, creativity and quality of life.”
Dr. Maas makes frequent television appearances on such programs as NBC's TODAY Show, Prime Time Live, Good Morning America, Regis and Kelly, The View, ABC's 20/20, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. Dr. Maas is past chairman of the Department of Psychology at Cornell University. He teaches introductory psychology at Cornell University and conducts research on the relationship between sleep and performance.
His new children's bedtime story about sleep, “Remmy and the Brain Train,” is designed to educate young readers (and their parents) about the importance of good sleep and how to establish good sleep habits that will last a lifetime.
The lecture will take place Monday, April 7, 2008 at the Marriott Boca Center from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Seating is very limited and reservations are recommended for this FREE lecture. RSVP by calling the Boca Raton Community Hospital Foundation at 561.955.4142.

FAU
Alan B. Larkin Symposium
Veteran journalist Helen Thomas addressed an audience of over 1,700 people in Florida Atlantic University’s Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium recently as part of the Alan B. Larkin Symposium on the American Presidency. Thomas conveyed stories from a lifetime of covering every U.S. president since John F. Kennedy as part of the White House press corps. She acknowledged her reputation for asking the tough questions – a reputation that even made it to Fidel Castro, who, she relayed, when asked what the difference was between being the leader of America and the leader of Cuba responded that he didn’t have to answer to Helen Thomas.
Thomas still asks tough questions of the president as a columnist for Hearst Newspapers, and she told the audience that she thought that journalists today aren’t being tough enough in their reporting. “There is too much at stake for the press to toss in softballs,” she said.
