Red Cross Searches for 2nd Annual HEROES for the American Red Cross

Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter Sets Campaign Goal of $200,000

The American Red Cross Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter is in search of very innovative volunteers for its 2nd Annual HEROES for the American Red Cross south county fundraising event that runs from March 5 through April 2.

Anyone who volunteers to be part of the community-wide campaign commits to raising $1,000 during the four week time frame in any creative fundraising manner they choose. One hundred percent of the monies raised will go to support the South County Service Center of the American Red Cross Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter.

“We’re calling on all creative philanthropists in our area,” says Phil Renaud, committee member of the 2008 HEROES for the American Red Cross. “If you’ve got a unique idea for raising money and awareness of the American Red Cross, we would be honored to call you a HERO.”

Renaud adds that volunteers can put the “fun” in fundraising through creative events such as: Themed Bake Sales, Yard Sales, Car Washes, Ice Cream Socials, Talent Shows and Dress Down Days at Work.

Along with Renaud, the dedicated committee members who are collectively chairing the campaign include Madelyn Savarick, Bonnie Mason, Pam Begelman, Asa Lena Loof, Barbara McCormick, Matina Nimphie, Debra Onkenhout, Sally Painter and Marti White.

All HEROES volunteers reaching the $1,000 goal will be recognized through a special celebration and inclusion in a series of congratulatory advertisements in the Sun-Sentinel newspaper.  HEROES already committed are:

5th Annual Dinner Dance

The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), will host its 5th Annual Dinner Dance, March 8, at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. The event starts with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 8 p.m.  Premier party planner, Bruce Sutka, will transform the club into the magical Kingdom of Thailand.  This year’s honoree will be film writer/director Joseph Greco for his distinguished debut feature,Canvas, that deals with growing up in Florida with a schizophrenic mother.  Honorary Chairman is Dr. Kathryn W. 10th Anniversary Luncheon

The Arthur R. Marshall Foundation’s 10th Anniversary & Recognition Luncheon will take place, March 7 at The Beach Club, Palm beach. The keynote speaker will be internationally acclaimed environmental artist Betsy Damon, whose current Eco-Art project is the Olympic Forest Park Project in Beijing, China, which will be a part of the 2008 Olympics. The luncheon is being chaired by Judy Schrafft of Palm Beach, a published author and world-class scuba diver who has long worked to preserve South Florida's native environment. WPEC-TV anchorman Curt Fonger will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the luncheon. The American Red Cross Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter’s 18th Annual Polo Luncheon & Auction will be held at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, March 9. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m.  Champagne, authentic Brazilian Caipirinhas and hors d’oeuvres will be served.  The silent auction will feature a collection of unique International items.  Exotic cars and super cabs by Freightliner will also be on display. Live entertainment will be provided by The Tito Puente, Jr. Orchestra.   Denise and Brad Alexander are event chairman. One of the premier players in the history of the sport, Carlos Gracida has been named as Honorary Polo Chairmen. Ralph Lauren and LPGA star Morgan Pressel have launched a year-long fundraising campaign to support breast cancer programs and services at the Eugene M. and Christine E. Members of The Unicorn Children's Foundation (UCF) enjoyed an elegant evening aboard the Carrousel Yacht, Jan. 17.  The evening was donated by Beatrice Clancy and was used to acquire distinctive auction items for the foundation’s upcoming 10th Anniversary Gala Celebration.  The “Key to the Golden Palace” galawill be held, March 7, at the Mar-a-Lago Club.  This year’s Gala will honor Unicorn Grand Ambassadors Mike and Valeria Rosenbloom. Grand Honorary Host for the evening will be Donald J. Trump.  Live  auction items will include a 1963 Silver Cloud III Rolls Royce formerly owned by Rex Harrison, and a South Sea Pearl Necklace with diamond clasp worth $35,000 from Ella Gafter of Ellagem. The Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) hosted the first charity luncheon to benefit the Sandoway House Nature Center, Jan. 19. The event, hosted by Yvonne S. Templeton, at City Oyster on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach raised $5,000 which went “Dancing With The Sandoway Stars”  held  Feb. 15. “It is our hopes that by partnering with the Sandoway House Nature Center we can bring the much deserved attention to this small, but vital organization that does such great work educating the public of the delicate marine environment just off the Delray Beach shores,’ said Mark Baron, tournament director. The Delray Beach ITC, an ATP Tour Event, took place February 9 – 17.  Sandoway House at 142 South Ocean Boulevard, Delray Beach  provides a living history lesson with its exhibits, facilities and activities. The South Florida VIPs (Very Innovative Professionals) held a  Scavenger Hunt on Atlantic Avenue recently. Proceeds form the event benefited Kids in New Directions (KIND) Close to 100 people arrived at Dada Restaurant to register for this fun event. Teams were given clues to bars and restaurants within walking distance. All teams had 90 minutes to arrive at the final destination – Delux – with all team members present and proof of having visited all the establishments on their assigned route. "As observers, we had lots of fun watching the teams figure out the clues and answers for their next destination!” said Lori Ludwig, co-founder of the South Florida VIPs, with Nicole Flier. Tyson Foods Donation

Florence Fuller Child Development Centers and the Daily Bread Food Bank received a donation of 18,000 lbs of chicken and other protein from Tyson Foods, Inc.   The gift, made in person by Tyson CEO Richard Bond, was part of the company’s commitment to fight hunger.  “The generosity that Tyson Foods has shown is extraordinary. The need for protein is always high, but even more so now when food costs are spiraling, donations are down and children who need it most may not have access to food other than what we can provide for them,” said Doug Paton, chief executive officer of the Florence Fuller Child Development Centers. Neiman Marcus Event

Israel Cancer Association USA (ICA USA) hosted a “Chai Tea, Lecture & Presentation” for supporters, Jan. 15 at Neiman Marcus Boca Raton’s Mariposa Restaurant. Guests enjoyed two presentations on the skin, the biggest organ in the body: one about skin cancer, the other about skin care.  First, a lecture, “What’s New and Old in Clinical Evaluation of Skin Cancers” by Harold Rabinovitz, M.D., expert in diagnosis/treatment of pigmented skin lesions and a clinical investigator on trials for melanoma detection and diagnosis in South Florida.   This was followed by a  lecture and Q & A by Bonnie Burnside, a representative of N.V. The Washington Institute for Near East Policy gathered for the Annual Palm Beach Reception and Briefing, Feb. 10 at the Breakers.  The program featured three of the Institute’s senior scholars:  Dr. Robert Satloff, Executive Director, David Makovsky, Director of the Middle East Peace Process Project, and Dr. Matthew Levitt, Director of the Stein Program on Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence.  The Middle East experts discussed progress and challenges of the Middle East Peace Process. Bloomingdale’s Boca Raton and artist Salvatore Principe join forces to create two art-inspired programs during Bloomingdale’s “HOT” fashion and special events from March 6 – March 16.
