BERTHA F. COHEN

Bertha F. Cohen, of Miami Beach, Florida, passed away on April 29, 2008. Born March 17, 1916, in Bethlehem, PA, the daughter of Morris and Lena Finkelstein, Berte, as she was preferred and was affectionately called by all who knew her, was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, businesswoman, community leader and philanthropist. After operating family jewelry stores in the Lehigh Valley for over twenty years, she and her beloved late husband Bernie founded Piercing Pagoda, Inc. in 1968, for which she served as vice-president for almost twenty years. A committed activist and humanitarian, Berte zealously participated in numerous civic affairs: lifetime trustee of Moravian College, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937, vice-president of Bethlehem’s United Way, St. Luke’s hospital auxiliary, Red Cross president, a community lecture series devoted to dispelling ethnic and racial prejudices and other worthy causes. Her philanthrophy impelled her to co-sponsor with Bernie Cohen Arts and Lecture Series at Lehigh University, Moravian College and Northampton Community College, establish academic chairs at Lehigh and Moravian and fund programs for international students. After retiring to Boca Raton, Florida, she continued her commitment to education and good works with similar programs for Florida Atlantic and Lynn Universities. Berte and Bernie were inveterate world travelers. During their 61 year marriage, there were few places they failed to visit. These trips were lovingly and humorously chronicled in their “Innocents Abroad” column published for years in the local papers. Also a lifetime photographer, Berte garnered many awards and much recognition for her work. Predeceased by her older daughter, Linda Cohen Cooper, she will forever be in the hearts of her daughter, Nancy (Martin) Engels, her grandchildren, Kenny and Julie Engels, and her great grandchildren, Jinu and Ava Engels and Miles Bernard Gerber. Private Services will be held in Boca Raton.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Berte Cohen’s name to Moravian College Leadership Center, 1200 Main Street, Bethlehem, PA 18018
