FRIEDA NATHAN
Frieda Nathan passed away on April 3, 2008, in Arlington, Virginia. She was born on July 24, 1919, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to parents Abraham and Sarah Agin. She had an older brother, Robert Agin. She graduated valedictorian from Union City (NJ) High School and graduated summa cum laude from New York University in 1939 with a major in mathematics and a minor in Latin. Her first position was with the US Census Department. Then she did actuarial work for Mutual Life Insurance Company, followed by a teaching position at Evander Childs High School, Bronx, NY. On July 21, 1940, she married Norman Nathan of Hoboken, NJ. Together they had three daughters, Linda (Richard) Kuzmack, Michele Nathan (Lee Herring), and Lois Nathan. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Julian, Evan, and Damian Herring-Nathan; Stefanie Kuzmack and Tricia Kuzmack Stering; and Rima and Miles Nathan, as well as her sister-in-law, Josephine Agin, and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces/nephews.
In 1949, the family moved from West New York, NJ, to Utica, NY, where Frieda continued her teaching career in mathematics at Utica College of Syracuse University. In 1968, the family moved to Boca Raton, FL, when her husband accepted a professorship at Florida Atlantic University. She then taught at Palm Beach Junior College and St. Andrews Academy. After retiring, the couple relocated to Arlington, VA, in 1996 to be near their two oldest daughters. Many months before she lost her 15-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, she asked her husband, “When I die, will you come with me?” “Yes I will, when I can,” he assured her. Among other things, she will be remembered for her gentle ways, her beautiful smile, and her dedication to her family. Expressions of sympathy can be e-mailed to ProfNNathan@hotmail.com. Contributions in her memory can be made to the national Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633, or to the National Capital Area Chapter, Alzheimer’s Association, 11240 Waples Mill Rd., Suite 402, Fairfax, VA 22030.
