Developers may get extra time to get permits

The Boca Raton City Council, sitting today as the Community Redevelopment Agency, may ease the time limits given to developers to obtain permits for commercial projects.

The CRA will hold a public hearing this afternoon on an amendment to agency rules extending the construction commencement date from 12 to 24 months following the approval of a plan – also known as an individual development approval (IDA)/

This would apply to new and currently approved projects, even those under construction, the amendment says.

During the past year, many developers have returned to the CRA, City Council or Planning & Zoning Board asking for extensions for projects. An application to extend the time period for the Summit complex at 131 S. Federal Highway is on Tuesday’s council agenda.

Several people from the development trade, architect Derek Vander Ploeg and attorney Wendy Larsen among them, have told the Boca Raton News that trying to get a large project going in a year is very difficult.

The CRA meeting will immediate follow the City Council workshop scheduled at 1:30 p.m. today in City Hall.
