Boca Raton Middle School students visit city facilities

Published July 3rd, 2008

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The city of Boca Raton recently hosted the seventh grade class from Boca Raton Community Middle School at four different city facilities.

More than 300 students toured Fire Station No. 1, the Police Services Department, the Utility Services water treatment plant and the Municipal Services Complex.

During the tours, which lasted 45 minutes, students got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the city while also learning about the different types of jobs performed by Boca Raton city employees.

The end-of-the-year field trip was also a follow-up on last October’s City Government Week presentation to the Boca Middle seventh grade by city staff members.

According to the Florida Sunshine State Standards, seventh graders study civics, which encompasses all levels of government, including city government.  The October presentation showcased the many services the city of Boca Raton provides to its residents.

“Because city government is the government closest to most citizens and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents, city officials were eager to take advantage of the opportunity to pass along an understanding of public services and their benefits,” said Susan Saxton, assistant to the city manager.

According to Lisa Klein, lead teacher in the Social Studies Department at Boca Raton Community Middle School, the student feedback was positive. “They had a really great time, much more fun than they thought they would.”

Presentations by a motorcycle police officer, a firefighter/paramedic, traffic engineer and a water plant supervisor were part of the students’ visit.  They illustrated the diversity of municipal jobs,” said Klein.
