FROM STAFF REPORTS
Reconstruction began June 2 on the rehabilitation of the Spanish River Boulevard bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway.
The Florida Department of Transportation is handling the $3.5 million project, said FDOT spokeswoman Tish Burgher.
She said the Spanish River bridges are undergoing reconstruction that will cause periodic closures.
”This project consists of routine maintenance and rehabilitation of mechanical and electrical components that operate the bridge spans,” she said. The 37-year-old bridge, bridge decks and tender house will also be repainted.
At least one lane will remain open on the two-lane bridges at all times during construction, the DOT said. However, the bridges may close entirely at some point during the project.
The agency said electronic message signs will advise motorists in advance of closures and detours. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be maintained on one side of the bridge at all times.
Maritime traffic will not be affected by the construction. Also, all travel lanes will be opened if a hurricane evacuation is required.
The work should be completed by February 2009.
