Design work ongoing for Sugar Sand Park ‘modifications’

Designers continue to work on plans for “modifications” at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton.

Already a facility that offers unique pastimes – a children’s science explorium, a theater and a carousel – the South Military Trail recreation site is due for more.

Bob Langford, executive director of the Greater Boca Raton Parks & Recreation District, said commissioners met recently with the designers.

“We are in the process of getting the master plan amended, and the plat has to be approved,” Langford said.

In Sugar Sand Park’s future, officials see more picnic areas and nature trails.  “We haven’t finished with the master plan review,” he said.

He said the district has about $6 million set aside for the expansion.  “We will try to stay within that figure. But costs vary. The more you put in, the more it costs.”

In 1998, the new community center was built at Sugar Sand Park, along with a field house, family pavilions, outdoor basketball and in-line hockey rink. The price was $7.1 million.

The carousel was brought in several years ago.

The park offers year-round activities for adults and children.  It also includes art exhibits.  A display of citrus labels from the Museum of Florida History is being shown through July 24. This traveling exhibit is a collection of citrus labels that represent the thousands used in Florida between the late 1800s and the 1960s.

Also planned is the Sugar Sand Park Community Center “Show Your Stuff” staff exhibition. That’s when the staff and families show off hidden talents.

As part of Boca Festival Days, the park will host a juried art show featuring paintings, photography, sculpture and jewelry. It runs from July 25 to Sept. 5.
