The Palm Beach Grand Prix returns for its second year with three full days of racing at Palm Beach International Raceway the weekend of February 17 through 19. At the facility-wide motorsports event spectators can enjoy up-close action at various events from racing to car shows throughout the weekend.

The Palm Beach Grand Prix is an event where the roar of vintage and modern race cars collide featuring the racing action of the Historic Sports car Racing (HSR) Series, the Historic Moto Gran Prix Motorcycles, The Louis Chevrolet Endurance Series, and the Nordic Camaro US Race. Of these several classes racing during the weekend fans can see everything from historic sports racing cars to fifth generation Camaros in the Camaro only racing series.

When fans aren’t watching the raceway they have plenty to explore including the Palm Beach International British Car Show on Saturday and the SuperCarWeekend.com ShootOut on display on Sunday.

“At Palm Beach International Raceway it’s all about the fans… After the success of the inaugural Palm Beach Grand Prix in 2011, we’ve once again worked this year to offer nothing less than a thrilling and entertaining experience for motorsports enthusiasts in 2012,” said Jason Rittenberry, President of Palm Beach International Raceway. “We can assure our fans that the Grand Prix will be a weekend of non-stop action, and that there will never be a dull moment of on-track activity.”

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2012) – Burger 21®, a new fast casual concept founded by the owners of The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc., announced today that it is targeting South Florida for franchise expansion. The company launched an aggressive growth strategy in September 2011 to bring its 21 chef-inspired burger creations and hand-dipped signature shakes to more cities across the U.S. In just over a year of operation, the concept was named one of “12 Burger Chains to Watch in 2012” by Burger Business and “One of the Top 50 Restaurants in the Tampa Area” by the Tampa Bay Times.

Front Burner Brands Chief Concept Officer Mark Johnston, his wife, Concept Development Director Arlene Johnston, and his brothers, Chief Executive Officer Bob Johnston and Vice President Mike Johnston, founded Burger 21 in November 2009. Leveraging more than 25 years of franchising experience, the Johnston family recognized an opportunity to introduce a higher quality product in a rapidly growing foodservice category. The first corporate-owned Burger 21 restaurant opened in Tampa, Fla., in November 2010, and the second opened in Carrollwood, Fla. in October 2011. Two additional locations are in development and will open later this year.

“Our restaurants in Tampa have experienced tremendous success, and therefore, we believe the brand has great potential for growth in the South Florida market,” said Mark Johnston, Burger 21 CEO, president, chief concept officer and president of Front Burner Brands, management company for Burger 21. “There is competition from other burger concepts in the market; however, our restaurant goes beyond the better burger. We are confident that South Florida will embrace Burger 21 and its premium ingredients, innovative recipes and gourmet experience without the gourmet price.”

Burger 21, founded by the owners of the Melting Pot, is now ready to take on South Florida’s better burger scene. The company seeks to become part of the growing franchise industry that contributes nearly $35.5 million to South Florida’s economy and take a bite of the $65 billion burger business. Two Executive Roundtables will be held on February 29 in Aventura and March 1 in Boca Raton, so that entrepreneurs interested in opening their own Burger 21 in South Florida can meet face-to-face with execs to learn more about the new concept. The Tampa-based company already has a handful of restaurants on the west coast of Florida and is now looking to bring its 21 chef-inspired burger creations and hand-dipped signature shakes to more cities across the country.

The path to a college scholarship was long and at times trying for Glades Central quarterback Tanner Redish, but on Wednesday, he found his school of choice.

Tanner Redish

Redish (6-1, 170 pounds, No. 74 on the Big Board) signed with Jacksonville, an FCS (Division I-AA) program. He chose the Dolphins over Florida Southern, Alabama-Birmingham and Lafayette. Jacksonville’s head coach is Kerwin Bell, a former Florida quarterback and Dolphins’ draft pick.

“(Bell) was really impressed with my highlight tape,” Redish said.

Redish transferred to Glades Central for his senior season after three years at Glades Day, where he won two state championships. He struggled adjusting to the faster tempo and quicker players at his new school, but once he got comfortable, Redish settled nicely into the highest-profile job in Belle Glade.

He led all large-schools quarterbacks in passing yards (1,916) and threw 28 touchdown passes against nine interceptions. Redish helped Glades Central, which finished 12-1, reach the Class 5A region final.

He’ll join several area products at Jacksonville, including Dwyer alum Charles Dowdy and former Jupiter Christian standout Taylor Marsh. Former Glades Day quarterback Josh McGregor, who led Jacksonville to two Pioneer League championships, made quite the name for himself playing the same position as Redish. McGregor starred in the inaugural Battle of Florida college all-star game last month in Boca.

It didn’t take long for Boca Raton to find its new boys’ basketball coach.

Max Spinner, Boca's next hoops coach, was an All-Area selection in 2006.

Max Spinner, 23, the third-leading scorer in school history, will return to his alma mater as its head boys’ basketball coach, Boca Principal Geoff McKee said Wednesday. He’ll replace dismissed coach Rob Long, who was forced out on Friday.

Spinner is currently a fifth-year senior at Westminster College in Pennsylvania. He’s already obtained his bachelor’s degree from Westminster, and he’ll finish his graduate work in education in May. Once he arrives at Boca and gets certified as a teacher, he’ll likely teach ESE classes.

“It’s just an unbelievable opportunity,” said Spinner, who was walking into a team dinner before Westminster’s game at Bethany College on Wednesday night. “It’s a dream come true to coach my alma mater.”

Boca was 17-8 last season and will return all five starters to next season’s team, but Boca administration wanted a change in leadership style for its basketball program. Long, who coached Suncoast to a state championship in 1990, was shocked by his dismissal.

McKee said Spinner was a slam-dunk hire. The young coach has coached youth teams in the Boca Hoops youth league and worked as a de facto assistant coach at Westminster while rehabilitating his torn ACL earlier in his college career. Spinner said he wanted to become a graduate assistant for a college program after his final playing season, but coaching high school — especially at his old school — too good to pass up.

“I don’t want to dwell on the past,” Spinner said. “I’ve been given a great opportunity. That’s what my focus is — it’s not about me, it’s about the kids progressing.”

The recruiting season’s biggest drama is over: Seminole Ridge running back Gary Holmes has signed with Florida Tech.

Gary Holmes

Holmes (5-9, 175 pounds, No. 16 on the Big Board) chose the fledgling Division II program at Tech over Delta State in Mississippi, joining Palm Beach Gardens’ two-way lineman Anthony Hicks and former Wellington lineman Austin Peavler in Melbourne.

“He had to pick between them and Delta State and possibly waiting,” Seminole Ridge coach Matt Dickmann said. “But he’s got a great attitude. He’s happy to be able to study engineering there and he can get his master’s there.”

Holmes’ signing ended a long and frustrating recruiting process. He’s widely considered a Division I talent by area coaches and players. He was heavily recruited by Middle Tennessee State, Western Michigan and Bryant, a I-AA program in Rhode Island. By January, Holmes said he’d pick between Middle Tennessee State and Western Michigan. He visited Middle Tennessee’s campus two weeks before national signing day, and wanted to verbally commit to the school.

Then everything blew up.

Western Michigan secured several commitments ahead of Holmes on its big board and withdrew its scholarship offer. A few days before national signing day, Middle Tennessee pulled its offer and said it would not accept Holmes’ commitment. Holmes said MTSU had told him he was the top-rated running back on its recruiting board.

And that’s how one of the area’s most decorated running backs — a two-time Post All-Area first teamer with more than 3,000 yards rushing in two seasons playing in Florida high school football’s largest class — became a free agent once again. Countless schools, Dickmann said, expressed their dismay that Holmes was still available, but they had to honor the players who had committed. As dominoes fell, Holmes was left with three options: Florida Tech, Delta State or waiting out the remaining 45 days of the spring signing period, hoping another school would come calling.

On Wednesday, he pulled the trigger, relieving some stress in Loxahatchee and ending an arduous, lesson-learned recruiting process.

“I’m just happy that Gary’s happy,” Dickmann said.
